Calibration verification is the process of confirming that the instrument’s calibration remains valid between calibration events by testing with calibrators and quality control materials and ensuring the results stay within predefined acceptance criteria.

In automated chemistry analyzers, a calibration establishes the relationship between instrument signal and analyte concentration using calibrators. After calibration, verification checks are performed between calibrations to make sure that drift hasn’t occurred and that the assay still produces accurate results. This typically involves running a calibrator or control material with a known target value and comparing the measured result to that target within a set tolerance. If the result falls inside the tolerance, the current calibration is considered verified and results can be reported as accurate; if it falls outside, recalibration or maintenance is triggered.

This approach helps catch changes due to reagent aging, instrument drift, temperature fluctuations, or other factors, ensuring reliable patient results. It’s not about the order of reagents, instrument temperature alone, or patient demographics.
